Automate Pinging Google Blog Search
Posted by Miles Evans

I noticed Google’s recently launched Blog Search is now allowing pings to be sent. I tested it out today with both Wordpress and MovableType and it seems to work okay. Here are the steps.
You can likely adapt this to any blogging platform that has a ping widget built in or I suppose even cron it. If you have questions you can try the Blog Search API or About Blog Search Pinging page at Google. The URL to ping is:
http://blogsearch.google.com/ping/RPC2
WordPress
- Click Options and then Writing in the admin control panel.
- Scroll down to Update Services and input the URL above in the text box.
MovableType
- In the admin area click on Settings then New Entry Defaults.
- Find the area labeled Publicity/Remote Interfaces.
- Add the URL above to the text box labeled Others.
Here is my list of ping URLs:
http://www.bloglines.com/ping
http://ping.feedburner.com
http://rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ping
http://blogsearch.google.com/ping/RPC2
You might also take a look at pingomatic if you’re paranoid.
Also if you are not already using it Feedburner is hands down the best syndicated feed management service available today. It really makes no sense not to use it. If you are publishing even semi-regularly you should really check it out.

"Since Technorati and all the rest are tracking my Feedburner feed everyone should be updated this way"..
Is this true? So is there no need to use Wordpress' default ping-o-matic service if I'm pinging Feedburner?

Actually I should have paid more attention. Technorati is really slow to update so I would recommend continueing to ping it via: http://rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ping
I will change the article to reflect this.

Thanks for the information. Pinging is so important if you want any traffic at all, yet you have to really dig for good ping URLs. As for Pingomatic, I have had no luck getting it to produce anything for me.
