News | Digg gets 0wn3d by its own Community

Forget about what I was blathering about yesterday over the autodigg hack. What happened shortly after I posted that was much crazier. As it turn out the HD DVD cypher was cracked and posted on the internet recently, much as it was for the original DVD back in 2001 when Jon Johansen (DVD Jon) released DeCSS.

News | Taking the Cool out of YouTube

YouTube has recently been adhearing too any and all copyright claims on its popular video service. Google Video did this long ago but until a couple of weeks ago I was happily watching UFC, Boxing and other PPV events to my hearts content. Alright so PPV events I can see but what prompted Fox News to pull the heated Clinton piece with Chris Wallace the other night?

Aaron Wall has just released a very nifty SEO research extension for Firefox - SEO for Firefox. The usual SEO metrics are pulled in and displayed right in your search results. News | Gbuy Beta Launch Today?

As reported earlier this month in Forbes Google is set to release their Paypal killer GBuy into beta today. Now of course Google has no comment on impending product releases so it remains to be seen if and when GBuy surfaces. In the very recent past its existence was completely denied.

So here is what we know about GBuy.

The official Google Adsense blog is profiling another Adsense professional today with Ivan Heneghan, a Dublin based optimizer pictured at right. News | Spammers Target DNS Servers

It would seem for the last few days a large website I maintain (a 3 server operation) was down for the count. I quickly realized the problem had nothing to do with me but with my registrar joker.com. According to the website they’re nameservers were under a DoS style attack.

here is how this works.

News | SES China - Johnny Chow Video

Alright this is my first attempt at messing around with video in any way so it is far from a superb job. The audio of Johnny Chow is not too bad but scoring a microphone last minute in Shanghai proved a daunting task. It’s quite watchable. Johny Chow is CEO of Google China and was has to be impressed with the man’s speaking ability considering English is his second language.

News | SES China: Who’s got the Juice?

Some of the English to Chinese translations didn’t make a whole lot of sense but considering the extreme differences between the two languages you couldn’t not be impressed with the effort. I wish I could have met some of the people actually doing this work. Hopefully the upcoming show in Tokyo takes notes from Chinese ingenuity and does a bi-lingual session – word on the street is this won’t be the case for the upcoming show in April. So I highly doubt I will be making the trip. Continue reading "SES China: Who’s got the Juice?"

News | SES China 2006: Initial Thoughts

As I write this John Chow, CEO of Google China and Jack Ma, CEO of Alibaba/Yahoo China have just finished their introductory keynote speeches to kick off day one of SES China 2006. Jack Ma, in particular was very impressive. He is definitely a bit of rock star in these parts as he holds the distinction of starting China’s first web page: www.chinapage.com. Let me come back to Jack. First a bit about what I have seen at the show and what is expected to come... Continue reading "SES China 2006: Initial Thoughts"

News | SES China - Behind the Iron Curtain

Wow what an exhausting weekend. The good news is I was comped a couple of press passes and a great hotel deal for the Search Engine Strategies China conference in Nanjing on the 17th and 18th next week. The bad news is scoring a Chinese visa and buying plane tickets at the last minute in Bangkok is a major ordeal. The visa alone took all day to organize – and for some reason all the flights out were booked so I was stuck paying double fare. On top of all that I wasted all weekend running around preparing for the event - business cards, handouts, portfolio, a haircut, that type of stuff.

News | Google's Share Price Plummet

In Bangkok there seems to be an overwhelming number of online stock investors. There also seems to be a huge group of online poker players here but that’s another article. Many of these guys day trade most of the usual NASDAQ favorites: AOL, Apple, Microsoft, Yahoo, NVIDIA and of course everyone’s favorite: Google or GOOG.

I should point out that most of these guys I know are quite l33t with their daily trading. One guy employs a system whereby he hires locals (aint cheap labour great?) to watch an index he generates with java, and react accordingly to a big green indicator. The software behind it is pretty intense and I have tried many times to let me market it. Again it is food for another article but suffice it to say his algorithm has a good track record.
