April Fools 2006
Posted by Miles Evans

It’s my birthday today and I have hopes of hitting the beach with the Nutter, so I figured I would collect some of the best April Fools pranks I spotted yesterday.
I think the only official Google pranks were Google Romance, the dog on the white house lawn via Google Maps, and the Google Earth aliens…
If you go to Google Earth and search for Area 51 you can see 2 aliens from past Google logos and a small saucer. For the offline version, the coordinates are:
37 14'41.55"N, 115 49'12.37"W. This has been removed so below is a screen shot.

Also Google related Matt had an I’m moving to Yahoo! post.
Google advertising on the Moon? Hell ya it’s about time.
2600, the only magazine subscription I bother with in Bangkok, was decked out in a l33t Google theme – pictured at top.
Yahoo! buys all the Web 2.0 companies in existence. This isn't that far off.
Not to be left out Ask announced RhymeRank which serves up search results that rhyme with your query.
FreeBSD had a hilarious 2.2.9-RELEASE announcement.
Adotas had one on two new Google Adwords sizes of 2560 x 1920 and 1 x 1 pixels.
Slashdot made me look twice with their slick new interface pictured below.

Off the web NBC ran some public service announcements reminiscent of their The More You Know campaign, but done by cast members of "The Office", while in character. Some of these are quite good.
For a much better list check out the Wikipedia's list of April Fools 2006 hoaxes.
