What is Eon8?

A few days ago there was some buzz in IRC about an impending cyber attack signaling the end of the world which was to take place on June 30th, 2006 dubbed Project X13600. Scared yet? Well you should be because that is only 16 hours away!

So wtf is eon8.com? I wish I knew. I guess we will see soon enough but it’s already a very clever marketing ploy as I see it on digg’s front page, IRC, and the usual places these memes surface. It seems people everywhere are quoting bible passages, messing with their system clock, and speculating what fizzle pop new service eon8.com is really going to be.

Launch hype is nothing new but there seems to be some really clever stuff appearing recently. In a world of 3 second attention spans hype is a necessary part of any new campaign. It is also normally quite inexpensive to pull off as you are relying on others to spread the word. The guys behind eon8 are even posting cryptic messages on the forums where much of the chatter is happening. At any rate I guess there is something to learn here from a viral marketing perspective. That or we will all be dead in 16 hours.
